Nurse completes CALA

NEWTON — January 9, 2014 — Beth Sylvester, RN, BSN, CHPN, CALA and nurse liaison for the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice has successfully completed and received her Certification for Assisted Living Administrator (CALA). The course is provided by ALTA, Associated Living Training Associates who deliver a team of training associates with extensive knowledge of long term care training, education, regulatory affairs and direct service provisions. All team members have participated in Assisted Living workshops, on-site visitations to Assisted Living Residences in the USA, and have been approved by the Department of Health to conduct Assisted Living Training in New Jersey and they are all Assisted Living Administrators and Members of the Department of Health Assisted Living Work Group. The program consists of a home study of Senior Living University’s National Assisted Living Administrator Certification Program coupled with ALTA’s four-day course covering New Jersey specific assisted living requirements. Upon completion of the four-day course, participants can be eligible to sit for the New Jersey Assisted Living Administrator’s examination.

Sylvester has been with the hospice for 15 years working both in the field and in a supervisory capacity, which makes her a very qualified choice to serve as the administrator for the new home. Her license requires renewal every 3 years and an on-going commitment of 30 topic specific CEU hours to keep the license current. Cecelia Clayton, hospice Executive Director reported that “Beth brings a wealth of hospice and palliative care experience and the additional certification will only enhance her standing in the field. We look forward to the opening of the Home For Hospice, which, under Beth’s leadership and direction will provide our patients, and families another much needed care option for our area. I am tremendously pleased that we will have such an outstanding nurse overseeing the home.” The new Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice is slated to open this year.
