Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice keeping local contractors busy
Newton, NJ – August 9, 2013 – When Julia Quinlan, Co-founder and President of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice embarked upon her new mission of building a home for hospice patients she knew the venture was not possible without the support of the community. The capital campaign that followed seeking the funding has successfully raised 50% of the 5 million dollars through generous donations, sponsorships, pledges, and fundraising activities from the community. More capital is still needed, but the groundbreaking of the Fredon, NJ project took place in March of this year with all the essentials now coming together.
“Keeping the community involved is important but so is giving back to a community who has been so very giving.” stated Cecelia Clayton, Executive Director of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. In the final analysis the hospice board, committees and management deemed it important to employ local talents and firms to see the project through. It began when Julia Quinlan and the owners of Waterwheel Farm, the Klemm’s, shared a vision of a peaceful spot where end of life patients who could no longer remain at home, would be able to spend their remaining days, weeks, or months. A building committee was formed and sought the services of HQW Architects located in Newton to start preparing Julia’s dream. They created a building design that provided the medical facility needed, but with a home-like feeling most suited to the terrain and surrounding pastoral setting; as well as taking advantage of the sweeping vistas of the Kittatinny Mountain range. Each patient room is open to that view, including the main dining area. Dykstra Engineering, also of Newton, planned and prepared all the engineering and landscaping strategies maximizing once again the views as well as being sensitive to the country-side surroundings.
Deacon Homes in Sparta has completed construction of the site work, and T.M. Brennan Contractors has just signed into contract to build the Home for Hospice. Financing the project stayed at home as well with Lakeland Bank providing the construction loan and the future mortgage. With all the major elements in place the hospice home is anticipated to be completed by the spring of 2014, and will be the first of its kind in the region.
The home will expand the services of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice and complete the full continuum of hospice care to the community making Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice the first and most experienced hospice in Sussex County servicing northwest NJ and northeast PA. Families with loved ones in hospice, or hospice patients who need round the clock care will then have a home like setting available. The home will help families in situations where they can no longer care for their loved one at home; such as households with young children and caregivers who find it overwhelming to care full-time for their loved one. The home will also benefit the hospice patient returning from a hospital stay who may need more care than the family at home can provide, and finally temporary respite care to help ease the caregivers’ role and give them a much needed break.
