National Healthcare Decisions Day Set for April 16, 2009

Newton – April 2, 2009- Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, along with other national, state and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making—an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16, 2009 as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD). As a participating organization, Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with NJ & PA state laws.

Specifically, on April 16, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice and Home Health Care is welcoming the public throughout the day with free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms at their three locations. These resources will be available at the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice office located at 99 Sparta Ave, Newton, the Karen Ann Quinlan Home Health Care office located at 755 Memorial Parkway, Suite 303A, Phillipsburg, NJ and in PA, 315 West Harford St. Milford

“As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known,” said Dr. Roxanne Debski-Seigel, Director of Marketing and Advancement for Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation. “Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and healthcare providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues before a crisis and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so.”

Third Annual Joseph and Julia Quinlan award presented in Atlantic City Conference

Atlantic City-June 14, 2009- The State University College of Nursing sponsored its Fourth Annual Conference of the New Jersey End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education Consortium (NJ-ELNEC) on May 18-19th at the Sheraton Hotel, Atlantic City, NJ. The theme this year was “What Is the Future of End of Life and Palliative Care?”

In March of 2006 the First Rutgers Conference of the NJ End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium was held where Julia Quinlan had the distinct honor of being the Keynote Speaker. Julia Quinlan is the Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, located in Newton NJ.

In 2007, the Rutgers College of Nursing initiated the Joe and Julia Quinlan award.

The award represents recognition of a NJ lay person, professional or volunteer who has made a significant difference in the provision of palliative care and end-of-life care. Julia Quinlan was the first honoree and accepted the award in memory of my beloved husband Joe.

In May, 2009 Julia Quinlan presented this esteemed award to Onajovwe O. Fofah MD, FAAP. of the Circle of Life Palliative Care Program. Dr. Fofah instituted the first Neonatal Palliative Care program in NJ which serves the smallest and most vulnerable of the hospice patient population, and their families. He is described as “a humble man that has made a significant difference in the provision of palliative care and end of life care. I felt privileged and proud to present the award to Dr. Fofah.” stated Quinlan.

Mrs. Quinlan continued “The tradition of presenting the award to a worthy individual is very meaningful to me. It serves as a reminder to us all the true meaning of hospice. For almost thirty years the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice has felt it a privilege to share the most precious moments at a most difficult time in the life of patient and family.”

Karen Ann Quinlan Home Health Care takes quality initiative.

Phillipsburg, NJ – February 2, 2010- Karen Ann Quinlan Home Health Care has joined The Home Health Quality Improvement (HHQI) National Campaign for 2010. The HHQI is a grassroots movement designed to unite home health stakeholders and multiple health care settings under the shared vision of reducing avoidable hospitalizations and improving medication management.

“What this means for the consumer is that when shopping for health care, people can look for their best local results by visiting this site”. Cathy Shane—Director of Nursing for Karen Ann Quinlan Home Health Care.

The site collects and processes hard data from patient care results based on documented patient feedback from each organization, and then makes an analysis of where that organization does well or is lacking. “For example this type of data would answer the question how comfortable was the patient in comparison to other home health care providers?” “All this is an effort to increase quality of care and then to let the public know,” Shane continues.
